Ruwaydah Jaunbacus joined Uteem Chambers in 2015 and was appointed Partner & Director in February 2023. Her practice covers civil, corporate & commercial law, alternative dispute resolution, industrial property, employment, insurance, and insolvency matters.

She regularly represents international corporates, funds, banks, and high-net-worth individuals in complex cross-border disputes, recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments, arbitral award enforcement, insolvency applications and commercial litigation. Her experience includes proceedings before the Supreme Court of Mauritius, Permanent Court of Arbitration, and parallel litigation in the UK, US, India, Cayman Islands, Zambia, and UAE.

Ruwaydah graduated with an LLB (Hons) from the University of Mauritius (2012) and ranked first nationwide in the Mauritius Attorneys’ Vocational Examinations (2013). She completed her pupillage under Me André Robert, Senior Attorney-at-Law. From 2020 to 2022, she served as a Council Member of the Mauritius Law Society.

Civil Litigation

  • Advised and represented high-net-worth individuals from Pakistan, England and the UAE in asset-related and trust disputes, including applications under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

  • Acted for a Mauritian conglomerate in evidence-gathering proceedings on behalf of the Government of India.

  • Represented Essar Group and Grassfields Holdings Ltd in the recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments from India and Cameroon.

  • Represented Aloe Private Equity SAS in a conservative-seizure application.

  • Counsel in election petition and constitutional redress cases involving both general and village elections.

Corporate & Commercial Litigation

  • Advised Essar Global Fund Limited in multi-billion-dollar disputes with ArcelorMittal USA LLC and related winding-up and tierce opposition proceedings, coordinating parallel actions in multiple jurisdictions.

  • Represented Fuel Transport Holdings Ltd in USD 7.8 million shareholder and director disputes involving entities in Mauritius and the BVI.

  • Represented General Electric Company / GE Capital Global Energy Investments B.V. in derivative-action proceedings concerning a Ugandan oil-refinery consortium.

  • Advised BGFIBank Gabon SA, iflix International Pte Ltd, Atlantic Coast Regional Fund, IFC, AfDB, and CCD Group PLC in high-value shareholder and loan-related disputes.

  • Represented Global Agri Holdings Ltd, Swan Rise Ltd, and Suntac Ltd in share-register rectification applications exceeding USD 2.6 million in aggregate.

Alternative Dispute Resolution

  • Represented iflix International Pte Ltd in enforcement of an arbitral award worth USD 12.9 million + costs.

  • Acted in international arbitration matters before the Permanent Court of Arbitration and the Supreme Court of Mauritius, including proceedings to set aside arbitral awards.

  • Represented Galakha Entreprises Ltd in arbitration-clause enforcement against ECP Africa Fund IV A LLC and ECP Manager IV LP.

Insolvency & Restructuring

  • Advised JPMP MPL Holdings Ltd and Calice Group LLC on winding-up proceedings.

  • Represented victims of a Ponzi scheme and petitioned for liquidation of the entity involved.

  • Advised a Seychelles foundation on winding-up of a protected-cell company.

  • Acted for Maersk (Mauritius) and others in statutory-demand proceedings.

Insurance Law

  • Regularly advises insurance companies on professional indemnity, directors’ & officers’ liability, investment-manager and contractor-risk policies.

  • Advised insurers on the FCA v Arch Insurance (UK) COVID-19 business-interruption test-case implications.

  • Represented Raphael Fishing Company Ltd before the Supreme Court following the grounding of FV Yu Feng.

  • Counsels insurers on feasibility of index-based insurance in Mauritius and coverage interpretation (e.g., Unoccupancy Clause and W71 Warranty).

  • Advises on multi-million-rupee D&O claims relating to the BAI Group liquidation.
